HP Toner: Understanding References and Choosing the Right One

HP is the best-selling toner brand—and the most confusing to reference, with its dual notations and suffixes. Choosing the wrong HP toner wastes time and money. This guide decodes the HP system to help you get it right the first time. To identify your cartridge directly, use our Find Your Toner tool; for the basics, see the guide to choosing your toner.

The HP Numbering System

HP assigns each toner two identifiers: a short commercial number (e.g., 12A, 26A, 59X) and a technical reference (e.g., Q2612A, CF226A, CF259X). Both refer to the same cartridge. The short number is easier to remember; the technical reference is printed prominently on the box.

“A” or “X”: The Rule to Know

The suffix indicates capacity: A = standard, X = high capacity. The 26A prints about 3,100 pages, the 26X about 9,000 pages—using the same printer. For high volume, the “X” is much more cost-effective per page, even if its unit price is higher. The same logic applies to 59A/59X, 89A/89X, etc.

Chips and Firmware: Why Originals Matter

HP deploys firmware updates (DynamicSecurity) that can block non-HP cartridges equipped with third-party chips—hence compatible cartridges suddenly being “unrecognized.” A new original HP toner remains functional after updates and guarantees the stated yield. See our selection of HP toners.
