Here is the reference table for SFP transceivers and their variants (SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28): speeds, module types, and ranges over fiber and copper. Keep it handy to equip a switch or router.

Transceiver formats and their speeds

Format Speed Details
SFP 1 Gbps 1000BASE (Gigabit)
SFP+ 10 Gbps 10G
SFP28 25 Gbps 25G
QSFP+ 40 Gbps 4 × 10G
QSFP28 100 Gbps 4 × 25G

Module types and ranges

Type Medium Approximate range
SX / SR (multimode) Multimode fiber ~300 to 550 m
LX / LR (singlemode) Singlemode fiber ~10 km
ER Singlemode fiber ~40 km
ZR Singlemode fiber ~80 km
DAC (direct attach cable) Copper 1 to 7 m
BASE-T (RJ45) Copper 30 to 100 m

Compatibility: the key point to check

Many manufacturers (Cisco, HPE, Juniper…) encode their modules: a switch may reject an unrecognized module. Always verify module compatibility with the switch’s brand and model. The fiber type (multimode OM3/OM4 or singlemode OS2) must also match on both ends of the link.

FAQ: SFP modules

What is the difference between SFP and SFP+?

The format is the same, but SFP tops out at 1 Gbps while SFP+ goes up to 10 Gbps. An SFP+ port generally accepts an SFP module, but the reverse is not guaranteed.

What is a DAC module?

A direct attach cable: a copper cable with an integrated SFP+/QSFP connector at each end, cost-effective for short links (rack, top-of-rack).

Is a module interchangeable between brands?

Physically yes, but manufacturer encoding may block it. Prefer a module compatible with your equipment.
